Classic Vehicles and Technical Inspection — Who Is Exempt from the Inspection Requirement?

Periodic Technical Inspection (PTI) is a mandatory procedure for most vehicles registered in Georgia. Its purpose is to improve road safety, monitor the technical condition of vehicles, and reduce their harmful impact on the environment.

The periodic technical inspection system for motor vehicles in Georgia was introduced on January 1, 2018, while undergoing technical inspection became mandatory for vehicles of all categories starting from January 1, 2019. Nevertheless, the applicable legislation provides for several exemptions to which the requirement to undergo periodic technical inspection does not apply.

Periodic technical inspection shall not apply to the following categories:

• Duty-unpaid motor vehicles;
• O1 and O2 category trailers and semi-trailers;
•  L-category vehicles (motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles);
•  Classic motor vehicles that are more than 40 years old;
•  Vehicles with a maximum design speed, as specified by the manufacturer, not exceeding 25 km/h;
•  Motor vehicles withdrawn from service.

What Does the Term “Classic Vehicle” Mean?

There is a common misconception regarding classic vehicles that a vehicle automatically qualifies as a classic vehicle and is exempt from technical inspection once it reaches 20, 25, or 30 years of age. Under the applicable legislation, this exemption applies only to vehicles that are more than 40 years old. Accordingly, periodic technical inspection remains mandatory for vehicles that are 30, 35, or 39 years old.
 

Once a vehicle reaches the age qualifying it as a classic vehicle, the vehicle owner does not need to submit an additional application or separately register the relevant information — the data is automatically reflected in the electronic system.

For all other motor vehicles, undergoing technical inspection is mandatory within the time limits established by law. The inspection interval depends on the vehicle’s category, year of manufacture, and intended use. Therefore, it is important to check the inspection deadline in advance to avoid missing it and facing the applicable administrative penalties.
